          Early life

          Wise was born in Budapest in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the son and grandson of rabbis.

          His grandfather, Joseph Hirsch Weisz, was Chief Rabbi of a small town near Budapest. His father, Aaron Wise, earned a Ph.D.
